My name is Karina. I am the owner of domain and website MichaelJackson.ru, and I would like to tell you the story of this project.
Site MichaelJackson.ru has a long history starting almost at the advent of the Internet – it was first opened in 1998. For the first six years, the website was a haven for Russian fans of Michael Jackson, a place where they could meet, get news and discuss their favorite artist. Then, in 2005, the site became a target for ill-wishers, to the point when I had to restore it at least once a week. My financial situation also changed, and I couldn’t afford to pay for the hosting anymore. The site closed.
For a while, I lost connection with the site team and the MJ fan community. Yet, I kept paying for the domain because I didn’t want it to get into the wrong hands. I was looking for a devoted fan to hand over the website to, but did not find anyone I could trust.
The domain was claimed by Sony Music – they tried to buy it from me, but I refused to sell it. They decided to wait it out and get the domain when it becomes free. It never happened. From time to time, I received offers from other potential buyers, but I didn’t want the domain to be used for commerce or to trash Michael’s name. For me, it had acquired a symbolic meaning – that of my and fans’ undying devotion to Michael. It became personal and untouchable.
Rumors circulated in the fan community that I had sold the domain and cashed out on it. But it wasn’t true. I was waiting for a chance to restore the site.
With the commoditization of the Internet, many websites about Michael Jackson appeared online (when we started in 1998, there were only two such websites in Russian). Then came social networks, and the need to seek out information about Michael passed – today, news is delivered straight to your desktop and phone. The content that the site team had created migrated to other resources. Everything changed so much, and I was searching for a new format to restore the site. Then, on the 20th anniversary of my fan life, I finally came up with the appropriate format for this project.
This is not a commercial project. Its purpose is not to make money, and it will never feature advertisement or promotion of any products. It is also not a forum for chin-wagging about Michael or his family.
This is a blog about Michael Jackson the artist, the humanitarian, the global phenomenon, and the beloved person. It is also a blog about us, his fans, as one of my desires was to pay tribute to our lives, to honor what we’ve spent many years on. I want this site to show that even in distant, cold Russia and Ukraine there are people who loved Michael with all their hearts, understood his message, respected him and admired him for decades.
We will talk about the lesser known sides of the man and the artist in an accessible way. For many years, media offered sensationalist coverage of his life and shallow clichéd coverage of his career. It’s time to reveal the man and the genius “behind the mask.”
